Back in the bad old days the South Fork was primarily rural. It was famous for growing potatoes and raising ducks.
Commodities like potatoes have largely given way throughout the Hamptons to mansions, fancy restaurants, and high-end shops.
There is a healthy vestige of the old rural South Fork, however, and one of the particular attractions of summer in the Hamptons is shopping for fresh local fruits and vegetables at one of the marvelous farmstands that dot the area.
While there are not as many farmstands as in the North Fork, the South Fork ones give no quarter for quality.
